How to Choose the Right Thickness for Your Foam Liner

Selecting the optimal thickness is key to achieving perfect sealing, user-friendly functionality, and cost-efficiency. Follow this professional guide:

Step 1: Analyze Application & Content

For Standard Rigid Caps (e.g., sauce jars, snack lids): Common Range: 0.6mm - 1.2mm.

For dry powders/solids (coffee, spices), choose 0.6mm-1.0mm for effective, economical sealing.

For liquids, oils, or hygroscopic products (juices, oils, powdered milk), opt for 1.0mm-1.5mm for greater compression resilience.

For Pump & Spray Heads:Common Range: 1.5mm - 3.0mm.

1.5mm-2.0mm suits water-based or thin lotions, balancing seal and feel.

2.0mm-3.0mm is recommended for viscous creams, shampoos, or serums to withstand piston pressure and ensure proper pump re-priming.

For Tube Caps or Flip-Top Closures:

Consider cap engagement depth and flexibility.

Common Range: 1.0mm - 2.0mm.Thicker foam may be needed for deep caps or snap-fit seals.

Step 2: Measure Critical Dimensions
The foundational rule: The liner's initial thickness must exceed the seal gap-the vertical space between the cap and bottle finish when closed.

Professional Calculation:

Minimum Initial Thickness ≈ Seal Gap / (1 - Compression Rate)

A compression rate of 20%-40% is typically ideal.

Example: For a 1.0mm gap targeting 30% compression:
1.0mm / (1 - 0.3) = 1.43mm → Select a 1.5mm disc.

Step 3: Consider Additional Factors

Content Properties: Thicker or higher-density foam (≥2mm) is advised for gritty or highly viscous products to prevent intrusion.

User Experience: Avoid excessive thickness to prevent "cap bulge" and ensure smooth opening.

Production & Cost: Thickness impacts material cost and automated assembly efficiency; 1.0mm-2.0mm offers excellent handling.
